Foothills Farm is thrilled to announce that Barney has been named the North Zone Horse of the Year at the Ontario Collegiate Equestrian Association (OCEA) Year-End Banquet! This special award is voted on by OCEA riders who compete throughout the season, recognizing the horses that make the biggest impact in their zone. Barney has been a barn favorite for years, and we couldn’t be prouder of him receiving this well-deserved honor.
The Ontario Collegiate Equestrian Association (OCEA) provides university and college students the opportunity to compete in equestrian sport while balancing their studies. The OCEA season consists of competitions across multiple zones, culminating in year-end championships and awards that celebrate both riders and the incredible horses that help them succeed.
One of the most unique aspects of OCEA competitions is catch riding. Unlike traditional horse shows where riders compete on their own horses, in the OCEA, riders draw a horse at random and mount for the first time right before they enter the show ring. This format levels the playing field, emphasizing rider skill, adaptability, and horsemanship.
Foothills Farm is proud to support riders from Laurentian University and Cambrian College, who compete as a joint team in the OCEA North Zone. These dedicated student-athletes travel to competitions throughout the season, showcasing their talent and teamwork in the catch-riding format. Barney, along with other wonderful donated horses, plays a crucial role in these events, helping riders learn and grow through the challenges of collegiate competition.
Barney’s recognition as North Zone Horse of the Year is a testament to his incredible nature and the impact he has on so many riders. Thank you to the OCEA, we are thrilled that Barney has fans that love him as as much as we do.
